World peace, or peace on Earth, is the concept of an ideal state of happiness, freedom and peace within and among all people and nations on Planet Earth. (Wikipedia)

This is the most commonly shared definition of world peace, and it is probably one of the most widely supported topics on the planet. In spite of the differences in opinion about almost everything, the concept of world peace is widely supported by political, religious, nationalistic, emancipative (feminism, gender equality) and racial (in)equality movements. It is not the concept of world peace that divides humankind; it is the way to achieve it. (Militant) members from all movements named above tend to be driven by a feeling of superiority.

My religion is the only true religion. My race/ skin colour /nationality /gender/ economic model (or situation) is superior to yours. Implicitly sending the message, your religion/race/ skin colour/ gender/ nationality/economic model is inferior. And not only those united in movements are infected by this, the mere fact of belonging to a certain gender/race etc. tends to favor those that look most like themselves above those who are less similar. This feeling of superiority blocks the road to the realization of world peace.Superiority is a form of inequality that leaves only the route to imposing world peace by force.

All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. A proclamation by the pigs who control the government in the novel Animal Farm, by George Orwell. The sentence is a comment on the hypocrisy of governments that proclaim the absolute equality of their citizens but give power and privileges to a small elite.

The pursuit of world peace has a long history and it came in many shapes.
  • World peace through strength (The term is traced back to the Roman Emperor Hadrian (reigned AD 117—138)
  • Karl Marx tried World peace by revolution.
  • Many have tried, but all of them stumbled on the same problems. They were not strong enough to enforce world peace.
  • And those who tried the non-violent way also failed (think of Mahatma Ghandi, the Dalai Lama.)

World peace has become a term equating to unfeasibility and is, at most, still used as a joke in a beauty contest film like “Miss Congeniality”. World Peace has devaluated. It has become the new Utopia, desired by everyone but not realized by anyone. People who engage in it are, at best, kindly laughed at, because it is generally seen as an unfeasible goal.

So now we landed in 2020 with World Peace as far from reality as in the times of Emperor Hadrian. World peace currently has the image of an unachievable goal that at most some unrealistic idealists believe in. There are no world peace meetings between world leaders, it is on no serious agenda. 2020 is the year that measures should be implemented to stop the global warming. The year in which refugees around the world are fleeing hunger, poverty, oppression, the effects of global warming and war. The year that gender equality and diversity is fighting for recognition. And the year the covid-19 virus caused a worldwide pandemic.

All these issues have something in common, without world peace, world tolerance and world solidarity, they will not be solved.

Covid-19 shows us, in the most painful way, that we are part of nature and just as vulnerable to it’s pandemics as a bat or a monkey. We need to work together on a global scale . Covid-19, like global warming, doesn’t stop at borders, it does not care if you are rich or poor, Muslim, Atheist or Jew. It does not care what colour your skin is, or your gender. This planet and it’s nature do not discriminate. It will kill you, regardless of who you (think you) are.

Instead of pointing at China, Congo or Holland, or bats (covid-19) ,monkeys (ebola) or goats (Q-fever) for that matter. Ask yourself how the virus got in the bat in the first place. It is natures way of telling us something is terribly wrong. We are not killing our planet, we are killing ourselves. This universe (and our planet is part of this universe) is a violent place. The only hope to survive in this environment is working together. Addressing the big issues mankind is facing, there is no other option then the realization of world peace:

  • Global Warming
  • Worldwide Pandemics
  • Sustainability
  • Energy Transition
  • Worldwide Immigration
  • Economical inequality

All these problems can not be solved without world peace, world equality and world solidarity. A world of countries that build walls to protect their borders (physical walls or legal obstacles) is not going to be able to face these global issues. So world peace must make a transition from beeing seen as an illusion and a phenomenon that cannot be taken seriously to beeing the solution mankind needs in the years to come. The current image of world peace will therefore have to change and strengthen. That is what this art project will focus on. What do you do with a product that you want to sell to the world, you advertise ! Now that peace through strengt and peace by revolution have failed. it’s time to try peace by art.

in the words of MILTON GLASER : Designers, however, have a voice. They are among the most influential bystanders because their skills enable them to communicate a message easily through the Web or through posters and printed pieces. A picture is worth a thousand words and designers have used this adage to their advantage for years by creating simple yet powerful designs that immediately convey the message to the viewer. The Design of Dissent focuses on graphic work that designers have made as a result of social and political concerns. The time is certainly ripe as the U.S., and world, flares in opposition on so many important issues. (less)

First and formost, the premise of this project is to raise awareness that no one is superior to the other and that we all need each other to achieve world peace, world equality and world solidarity.
